Can you elaborate on the steps of progressive discipline and how it is supposed to work?

I agree with Glenn’s response – with an added caveat – the conversations shouldn’t disturb others doing their work in the immediate/adjacent areas.

    Excellent commentary Glenn!

    Glenn,

First, I enjoy your management vignettes. .

Second, I have an example of employee selection for the holidays. One of my responsibilities while in the Air Force was to schedule crews with aircraft. As Jewish high holidays approached, one person approached me about getting off the schedule during this period. He was Jewish. Now, fast forward to Christmas holidays.

I scheduled the same person for a mission on Christmas day. He objected vehemently. I calmly asked him if he recalled asking for the Jewish high holidays off. He agreed that I had done that for him. I told him again that he was flying Christmas day. He directed lots of unkind words towards me that ended with “what will my wife and children think?” I asked him if his wife and children were also of his faith. He said yes. I told him that if he needed me to explain to his wife and children why he was working on Christmas day, I’d be happy to do it, but the bottom line was he was flying on Christmas day.

He flew on Christmas day and until he left the service a couple of years later, he never asked for the Jewish high holidays off again. Amazing!
